Julie,
Don’t let the cat in. I bought a bird and it’s in the living room.

The Milk Carton Kids are among of my favorites. Beautiful lyrics, incredible guitars, & perfect chemistry from two of the nicest guys you could ever meet.

Trust me. They played my living room.

The Milk Carton Kids – “Charlie”

While there are band comparisons thrown around in pretty much any review, it’s rare to hear a band compared to the uber-greats of the 60s and 70s.  No one is the next Beatles or Rolling Stones at SXSW.  The Milk Carton Kids are one of the first acts I’ve heard that really draw from the same place as one of those greats: Simon and Garfunkel.  Two singer songwriters armed with acoustic guitars, The Milk Carton Kids have that special touch. It’s so damn tender.  If you told me this was from the Newport Folk right before Dylan plugged in, I’d believe you.  I know this quiet storytelling may not be for everyone, but if The Civil Wars’ appearance at the freaking Grammys is any indication, there’s a large and enthusiast crowd looking for exactly what The Milk Carton Kids are all about.  Bonus: both of their albums are free to download on the band’s website.

Just because Brown Bird announced another local show and I’ve got Newport on my mind…

Here’s a quick video I shot of David & MorganEve performing “Fingers to the Bone” backstage at last year’s Newport Folk Fest during an impromptu jam session.

As they say, “Brown Bird is better listened to in a room made of wood.” I couldn’t agree more.
